Chapter 22 Human Microbiome Flashcards
Microbiome
A community of microbes living inside the human body; essential for human life
When does the microbiome begin to form?
At birth- passes from the mother’s vagina to the child during birth
Children who take high levels of antibiotics are at a higher risk of developing what?
Allergies and asthma
Bacteria
Makes up the bulk of the human biome but it also contains viruses and fungi.
Single-called organisms
Parts of a bacteria
Flagella, ribosome, plasmid, polo, cytoplasmic membrane, cell wall, capsule.
NO NUCLEUS
3 shapes of bacteria
Cocci- round or spherical (strep- chain form or staph-clusters)
Bacilli- rod-shaped
Spirilla- spiral shaped
Viruses
NOT CELLS
Spark human disease; smallpox, AIDS, types of cancer, and the common cold.
Must invade a host cell-attacking metabolic chemicals and ribosomes
Fungi
Molds and yeasts; live on soil and plants, even air. Some responsive tiny spores into the air
Pathogen
Microorganism that causes disease
