Explain community development.
Community Development involves local people coming together to identify social and economic problems in their area and develop a plan to solve these themselves. Regenerates area often by starting a local business. E.g. Tidy Towns
Explain the economic benefits of community development.
Job Creation for local people: New Businesses create jobs which reduces unemployment rate and improves standard of living.
Income spent locally: People spend the money they make from their community development job in their local area e.g. local pubs, shops.
Entrepreneurship Culture: people see their friends and neighbours setting up businesses and this motivates them to do same.
Taxes: government receives taxes from the new businesses and can fund infrastructure, grants and improving country.
Explain the social benefits of community development.
Community Spirit: Local people feel a sense of pride & community spirit and facilities are improved in the area with creation of wealth.
Less Migration: Local people are not forced to emigrate to larger cities for employment as local area is prosperous with facilities they need. This keeps the community and schools alive.
Environmental Benefits: Business and human activities often pollute the environment. Anything that reduces pollution increases attractiveness of area and quality of life. Transport is a key area to tackle in reducing greenhouse gases.
Explain APC with an example and it’s benefits.
Area Partnership Companies: help local people to set up a business in their local area and work towards their goals . E.g. Dublin Inner City Partnership
Benefits:
-Grants to fund expansion and startup. E.g. Buy equipment
-Training and workshops on running a business
-Provide premises to operate from (‘enterprise incubation units’)
-Assigns a mentor with expert knowledge to provide assistance.
Explain LEO and it’s benefits.
Local Enterprise Office: Helps local people establish and grow a new business to create strong economy.
Benefits:
-Provides advice to locals on how to set up a business. E.g. Register a business/ patent
-Grants to help business set up and expand. E.g. Equipment
-Provides workshops and training
-Assigns a mentor with expert knowledge to provide assistance.
Explain LEADER and it’s benefits. What is their aim?
LEADER: Funded by EU and government to help rural communities to develop. Aim is to reduce poverty, promote social inclusion and economic development. E.g. Provide Broadband
Benefits:
Advice to local entrepreneurs about viability, promotion and startup.
Grants to fund expansion and set-up. e.g. Equipment.
Explain FÁS and it’s services.
FÁS: Is an employment and training programme for long term unemployed people. Develops their technical and personal skills.
-Provides Training
-Works with local colleges to provide help to employers.
-Help employers advertise jobs
-Help and advice to unemployed to finding job opportunities
Evaluate the effectiveness of Enterprise Ireland in assisting indigenous Irish businesses.
Funding Supports-a range of financial supports, for start-ups, expansions and R & D. E.g. Ballygowans Water receive funding toward researching a new product.
Export Assistance-Enterprise Ireland provides international offices to assist exporting of Irish products. E.g. Tayto setting up abroad
