How did the Great Depression affect family life?
- Many families got very poor and the men had a lot of difficulty finding jobs.
- Some men got so depressed they gave up looking or even killed themselves.
- Couples delayed getting married and having children. For the first time, there weren’t enough births to replace the older people who were dying
- 1.5 million women were abandoned by their husbands
- 250,000 teenagers ran away and lived on the streets
What happened to education during the Depression?
Teacher salaries were cut and some schools had to close because there was no money to maintain them. By 1933 over 2,500 children weren’t attending school at all.
This children who grew up in the Great Depression were known for what?
They grew up taking care of themselves so they were known as very self-reliant (which means they relied mostly on themselves and not others)
What were the social classes (groups of people) that existed in the Depression?
- The upper class - usually business owners and the very rich who had invested in other things besides the stock market
- The middle class - people that supported themselves and their families by finding a job
- The lower class - poor
Did the unemployment problem (meaning how hard it was for people to find jobs) affect the upper class?
What did the upper class think about Roosevelt’s New Deal?
Unemployment really didn’t hurt the upper class. They were the people that hired other people.
The upper class didn’t like the New Deal - they felt it was a bunch of handouts to people who didn’t have to work for it.
Did the unemployment problem (meaning how hard it was for people to find jobs) affect the middle and lower classes?
What did the lower- and middle-classes think about Roosevelt’s New Deal?
The middle- and lower-classes were hit extremely hard by unemployment.
They loved FDR and the New Deal.

What was the diet of the average American during the Depression and what were some problem associated with it?
Most people survived on beans, potatoes, rice and flour. Meat and vegetables were hard to come by.
Many people were malnourished and weren’t getting enough food or the right vitamins and minerals.
In what ways to the Depression increase racial tensions?
Racism was as strong as ever in the South, but as blacks went North looking for work, some white workers felt they were taking “their” jobs.
What form of entertainment got really popular during the Depression, and why?
People loved going to movies to escape reality for awhile.
Who was Jesse Owens and why did Hitler not like him?
Jesse Owens was a black athlete for the US that competed at the 1936 Olympics in Germany. He won four gold medals, which embarrased Hitler who said that the black race was inferior to Germany’s.
What sort of books made their first appearance during the Depression?
Paperback books first showed up, and comic books also made their first appearance
What were the two most popular movies in 1939?
Gone with the Wind, and
The Wizard of Oz
Who was a very well-known musical composer who wrote songs for the Broadway stage during the Depression?
Who was another leading playwright during this time? A playwright is someone who writes plays.
George Gershin was a very popular composer.
Eugene O’Neill was a very popular playwright.
