How did the Great Depression affect family life?

A
  1. Many families got very poor and the men had a lot of difficulty finding jobs.
  2. Some men got so depressed they gave up looking or even killed themselves.
  3. Couples delayed getting married and having children. For the first time, there weren’t enough births to replace the older people who were dying
  4. 1.5 million women were abandoned by their husbands
  5. 250,000 teenagers ran away and lived on the streets

A

Teacher salaries were cut and some schools had to close because there was no money to maintain them. By 1933 over 2,500 children weren’t attending school at all.

  1. The upper class - usually business owners and the very rich who had invested in other things besides the stock market
  2. The middle class - people that supported themselves and their families by finding a job
  3. The lower class - poor

A

Unemployment really didn’t hurt the upper class. They were the people that hired other people.

The upper class didn’t like the New Deal - they felt it was a bunch of handouts to people who didn’t have to work for it.

Jesse Owens was a black athlete for the US that competed at the 1936 Olympics in Germany. He won four gold medals, which embarrased Hitler who said that the black race was inferior to Germany’s.
