American families were smaller than in the 19th century. Birth control was in wider use and many Americans wanted fewer children.
How did the role of American women change in the 1920’s?
Women finally got the right to vote in 1920, and more women worked outside the home than ever before. The growing telephone industry was a major source of employment for women.
What was a “flapper”?
A new model for American women that broke with traditional behavior by wearing shorter hair and shorter dresses, drinking, smoking, and dancing.
What happened with the younger generation in the 1920’s?
For the first time, a separate and different youth culture emerged in America - where kids had their own way of dressing, speaking, and behaving. There started to be more youth clubs and activities, like YMCA and Boy Scouts.

In the past, Americans largely spent their money on essentials like food and housing and if they couldn’t pay cash for something they didn’t buy it. In the 1920s, there were big advertising efforts to convince people they needed more, and they could buy things on credit.
