A system in which debtors are held in servitude, to labor for the creditors.
sharecropper
An agricultural system in which a tenet receives land, seed, etc. in credit and pledges in return a share of the crop to the creditors.
scalawag
Derogatory term for pro-Union southerners
carpetbagger
Derogatory term used by white southerners to describe northerners who came to the south after the civil war to work on reconstruction.
Andrew Johnson
He was Lincoln’s Vice President and he became president after Lincoln was assassinated. He was a democrat and almost got removed from office.
William Seward
He was the Secretary of State who adamantly opposed slavery and was part of the Republican Party.
Civil disabilities
Legally imposed restrictions on a person’s civil rights or liberties.
