Trail of Tears
In the fall and winter of 1838-1839, the U.S army forcibly removed about 15,000 Cherokees from their ancestral homelands in southeastern United States and marched them to Indian territory (present-day Oklahoma).
Tariff of Abominations
The “Tariff of 1825” was a protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States.
Indian Removal Act
Jackson’s policy, passed by congress as the Indian Removal Act of 1830, led to the forced uprooting of more than 100,000 Indians.
Bank War
The Bank War erupted in 1832, when Daniel Webster and Henry Clay presented congress with a bill to renew the Bank of the United States’ charter.
Whig Party
The Whig Party opposed President Jackson and a attracted many followers that hated Jackson including Clay, Southern states, evangelical protestants, and northern industrials and merchants. They called for active government programs and reform.
Two Party System
This was made up of the Whigs and the Democrats.
Spoils System
Rewarding political supporters with public office.
