Chapter 22 Flashcards
Lamarck’s two principles for evolution
1) use and disuse
2) inheritance of acquired characteristics
Use and disuse
Parts of body being used becomes stronger and larger (giraffes neck becomes longer reaching for leaves)
Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck
18th century naturalist, only one at time to propose HOW life changes over time, was completely wrong
Artificial selection
Selective breeding of domesticated plants and animals for desirable traits
Homology
Similarity in characteristics resulting from shared ancestry
Homologous structures
Structures in species that are similar bc of common ancestry (think of whale bat human cat diagram)
Vestigial structures
A feature of an organism that is a historical remnant of a structure that serves a function in the organisms ancestors (snakes have pelvises from ancestors that had legs)
Convergent evolution
Evolution of similar features in independent evolutionary lineages
Biogeography
Scientific study of past and present geographic distributions of species
