Chapter 21a Flashcards
All forms of cancer share this one characteristics
Uncontrolled cell division
An abnormal growth of cells that are either malignant of benign
Tumor or neoplasm
Abnormal mass of tissue surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue
Benign tumor
Invades surrounding tissue, spreads to multiple locations (metastasis)
Malignant tumor
Used to describe the changes in shape, nuclei, and organization within tissues of precancerous cells
Dysplasia
“Cancer in place” consisting of a million cells at its critical mass
Carcinoma in situ
Cancer cell leave original tumor and enter either the cardiovascular or lymphatic systems and travel to distant sites
Metastasis
Stimulate cell division, example ras
Proto-oncogenes
Inhibit cell division, example p53
Tumor-suppressor genes
Usually “glued” in place by cell adhesion molecules
Normal cells
Secrete enzymes that break down CAMs, so they are able to break free and continue to divide and evade self-destruction
