Chapter 21.3 - Speciation Flashcards
What is speciation?
It is the development of reproductive isolation between populations
What is genetic divergence
the separation of a single population into two different species due to mutations
What is partially repro isolation
When two populations can still produce fertile offspring, but have genetic differences
What is allopatric speciation
When a population is separated either by a geographical or decision factor
What is a subspecies
When two populations ahve yet to evolve but have population specific traits
What are the two types of allopatric speciation
- Vicariance
- Dispersal
What is vicariance
Separation due to geographical factors
What is dispersal
some individuals colonize a distant place like an island far from the source population
What is Peripatric speciation
A type of allopatric speciation where a few individuals from a mainland population move to a new location and evolve separately
what is Co-speciation
It is speciation that occurs in response to another species
What is a sympatric population
A population that evolves separately in the same area
Can speciation be instantaneous?
Yes
