Chapter 21: Respiratory Care Modalities-Non-invasive therapies Flashcards
What are the low flow Oxygen systems
Cannula, Oropharyngeal Catheter, Simple Mask, Partial Rebreather, and Non-Rebreather.
What are the flow rates, Oxygen percentage, and reason for using Low Flow Systems?
Cannula: 1-6L, 25-42%: low to med. concentration, precise accuracy not essential.
Oropharyngeal catheter: 1-6L, 23-42%: short term Rx low to moderate concentration. **% of O2 reaching lungs varies with rate/depth of respiration.
Simple Mask: 6-8L, 40-60%: low-mod. concentration
Partial Rebreather Mask: 8-11, 50-75; moderate O2 concen.
Non-Rebreather Mask: 12L, 80-100%: High O2 concentration.
what are the high flow systems of Oxygen Supplementation?
Venturi Mask: 4-8L, 24-40%: lows levels of supp. O2: most reliable and accurate.
Aerosol Mask: 8-10L, 30-100%: good humidity, accur FiO2
Transtracheal Catheter: 1/4-4L, 60-100%: Chronic O2 therapy.
Mask, aerosol, tracheostomy collar: 8-10L, 30-100%: used with aerosol devices.
T-Piece: 8-10L, 30-100: same as tracheostomy collar
Face Tent: 8-10L, 30-100: fairly accurate FiO2.
What are some nursing interventions to maximize respiratory function?
proper positioning, percussion, Chest PT, proper fit of O2 device, Breathing retraining, Incentive Spirometry, small volume nebulizer, postural drainage.
which positions do you implement first and second for postural drainage?
Use positions to drain LL 1st, then move to positions that drain UL next.
What is the frequency and timing of implementing postural drainage positions?
q2-4/day. Before meals and bedtime.
which positions drain LL and which drain UL?
LL: pillow in front of abd with pt either sitting or lying prone. Pillow under each hip.
UL: Pillow under buttocks, behind shoulders/back, pillow in front of abdomen.
