Chapter 21-Immune system Flashcards
Importance of phagocytosis
It’s important because it is a process where pathogens that made it through the first line of defense (membrane barrier) are stopped and engulfed by phagocytes.
Importance of natural killer cells
a unique group of defensive cells that can lyse and kill cancer cells and virus infected body cells before the adaptive is activated. NK cells can eliminate a variety of infected or cancerous cells by detecting the lack of “self” cell-surface receptors and by recognizing certain surface sugars on the target cell
Cells of the innate immune system
Epithelial barriers phagocytes dendritic cells plasma proteins Natural Killer Cells
Surface membrane barriers
The acidity of skin secretion inhibits bacterial growth
The stomach mucosa secrete a concentrated HCL solution and protein digesting enzymes to kill microorganisms
Saliva and lacrimal fluid contain lysozyme, an enzyme that destroy bacteria
