Chapter 21 : Drugs For Neuromuscular Disorders And Muscle Spams Flashcards
We are gonna talk about skeletal muscle relaxants for this chapter
She said we will not be talking about myasthenia gravis
What are the 2 types of muscle relaxants?
Centrally acting muscle relaxants
Direct acting muscle relaxants
What are the 2 functions of centrally acting muscule relaxants?
Relived muscle spasms and spasticity
Have sedative effects
Centrally - relax muscles
What are the 3 functions of direct acting muscle relaxant?
Decrease muscle spasms pain and increase range of motion
Suppress hyperactive reflex
Used for spastic disorders
What are the 5 side effects of skeletal muscle relaxants?
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Headache
Nausea
Vomiting
What is the medication we need to know for skeletal muscle relaxants?
Cyclobenzaprine ( flexeril )
What is the action of cyclobenzaprine ( flexeril ) and use ?
Relax muscle muscles
Relived muscle spasms
cyclobenzaprine ( flexeril ) side effects?
Anticholinergic effects
Blurred vision, dry mouth, tachycardia, urine retention, constipation
Don’t give glaucoma
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Dysrthymias
Since skeletal muscle relaxants knocks you by having a sedative effect, what do we tell our patients?
To avoid hazardous activities
Like no driving
What other medication should patients avoid when on a skeletal muscle relaxants?
Cns depressants
Clinical judgment
Cyclobenzaprine
Concept
- cognition
Recognize cues
- note whether patient has a history of narrow angle glaucoma
Analyze cues and prioritize hypothesis
- decreased functional ability
Generate solutions
- the patient will state they will not make any major decisions while taking muscle relaxants
Take action
- monitor serum liver enzyme levels
- observe for CNS side effects
- teach patient not to stop abruptly but taper off over 1 week
- teach patient to avoid alcohol and CNS depressants
- inform patient that most of the centrally acting muscle relaxants for acute spams are usually taken no longer than 3 weeks
Evaluate outcomes
