Chapter 2.1 Basic Chemistry Review Flashcards
What is Matter
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.
What are elements composed of?
Atoms
What are the primary Elements of the Earth’s crust?
Al, Si, O
What are the primary elements in organisms?
C.arbon H.ydrogen O.xygen. N.itrogen P.hosporus. Sulfur
Sub-atomic particles
- Protons
- Electrons
- Neutrons
All atoms of an elenent have the same………… which is called the………..
- Same number of protons
- Its called the atomic #
Mass number = ………….
Mass number is equal to the number of protons + number of neutrons
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of lrotons but different number if neutrons therefore resulting in different atomic masses.
What are radioactive isotopes?
These are unstable isotopes that release various types of energy in order to become stable.
Uses of radioactive isotopes
- Medical testing and imaging
- High radiation to kill and damage cancer cells and sterilizing medical products.
