Chapter 21 Flashcards
What is the primary drug of abuse in this world?
Alcohol
Problems that occur in each step of pharmacokinetics with an older adult
- Decreased absorption
- Distribution
- Metabolism
- Excretion
Steps of pharmacokinetics
- Medication is absorbed in the stomach by stomach acid (a good blood supply is needed for distribution)
- Liver metabolizes most meds
- Excretion
Pharmacotheraprutics
The use of medication to treat diseases. The benefit of a medication (desired effect) is weighed against the unwanted and dangerous effects (side effects) to measure the appropriate use of any medication.
Pharmacokinetics
The study of how medication moves into and through the body and how it is excreted through the body. The processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion are affected by aging and diseases and influence the pharmacodynamics of any drug.
Contraindicated use
some older adults receives drugs from several physicians. some have prescriptions filled at several pharmacies. Can cause drug interactions
