Chapter 21, 23, and 22 Flashcards
Immune System
The body’s defense mechanism against foreign substances (antigens and allergens)
Antigen
A foreign substance to the body
Allergen
Foreign substances that cause allergic reactions
Immune Response
Production of antibodies to fight foreign substances. An allergic reaction or life-threatening anaphylactic reaction is an abnormal response
Hypersensitivity
Altered reactivity to an allergen that causes an allergic reaction, after the sensitization that occurs on first exposure
Histamine
Chemical mediator, released from mast cells, in an anaphylactic reaction
Anaphylactoid Reaction
Reaction similar to an anaphylactic reaction that may occur on first exposure without prior sensitixzation
Malaise
A general feeling of weakness or discomfort
Endotracheal Intubation
Placement of a tube down the trachea to facilitate airflow to the lungs
Hives
Raised red blotches associated with allergic n anaphylactic reactions
Epinephrine
A natural hormone that, when used as a medication, constricts blood vessels to improve blood pressure, reduces leakage from blood vessels, and relaxes smooth muscle in the bronchioles
Auto-Injector
A device with a spring-loaded needle, used for injecting a single does of medication
Acute Abdomen
A sharp, severe abdominal pain with rapid onset. Can have a number of causes
Abdominal Cavity
The space located below the diaphragm that extends to the top of the pelvis
Peritoneum
The lining of the abdominal cavity
Abdominal aorta
The portion of the descending aorta from the thoracic portion superiorly to the distal point where the aorta divides into the iliac arteries
Umbilicus
The navel
Visceral Pain
Poorly localized, intermittent, crampy, dull, or aching pain associated with ischemia or distention of an organ
Parietal Pain
Localized, sharp, constant, pain associated with irritation of the peritoneum. Also called somatic pain
Referred pain
Pain that is felt in a body part removed from the point of origin of the pain
Peritonitis
Irritation and inflammation of the peritoneum
Markle Test
A test for peritonitis in which the patient stands on his toes, knees straight, then drops to his heels, or in which the heels of the supine patient are struck together or on the bottom. The jarring of the torso will elicit pain when the peritoneal linings are inflamed
Appendicitis
Inflammation of the the appendix
Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the the pancrease
Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the the gallbladder
Hematemesis
Vomiting blood
Hematochezia
Bright Red blood in the stool
