Chapter 2.1 Flashcards
What three sub atomic particles make the atom?
Protons Neutrons Electrons
How are isotopes of an element similar
Same number of protons and electrons, different neutrons
How does a compound differ from its component elements
it has different physical and chemical properties
main types of chemical bonds
Ionic and Covalent
atom
smallest and basic unit of matter
nucleus
made of protons/neutrons, center of atom
electrons
negatively charged particle
element
pure substance of one type of atom
isotope
atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons
compound
a substance formed by chemical combination of two or more elements
Ionic Bond
Formed when one or more electron is transferred from one atom to another
Ion
Positively or negatively charged atoms
Covalent bond
when electrons are shared between atoms(not transferred)
Molecule
when atoms are joined by covalent bonds; smallest unit of most compounds
Van der Waals Forces
a slight attraction between molecules when they are very close to each other
