Chapter 20 Vocabulary Flashcards
A typenf connective tissue whose cells contain fat
Adipose tissue
The study of the structure of an organism
Anatomy
The extracellular matrix, consisting of a dense mat of proteins and sticky polysaccharides that anchors an epithelium to underlying tissues.
Basement membrane
A type of connective tissue with fluid matrix called plasma in which blood cells are suspended
Blood
A type of connective tissue consisting of living cells held in a rigid matrix of collagen fibers embedded in calcium salts
Bone
A striated muscle that forms the contractile tissues of the heart
Cardiac muscle
A type of connective tissue consisting of living cells embedded in a rubbery matrix with collage nous fibers
Cartilage
The organ system that transports materials such as ingredients O2 & hormones to body cells and transports CO2 and other wastes from body cells
Circulatory system
Tissue consisting of cells held in an abundant extra cellular matrix which they produce
Connective tissue
The organ system that ingests food, breaks it down into smaller chemical units, and absorbs the nutrient molecules.
Digestive system
The organ system consisting of ductless glands that secrete hormones and the molecular receptors on or in target cells that respond to to the hormones, cooperates with the nervous system in regulatory body functions and maintaining homeostasis
Endocrine system
A sheet of tightly packed cells lining organs and cavities, also called epithelium
Epithelical tissue
A dense tissue with large numbers of collage nous fibers organized into parallel bundles. This is the dominant tissue in tendons and ligaments.
Fibrous connective tissue
The state of body functioning, a state of equilibrium characterized by a dynamic interplay between outside forces that tend to change an organisms internal environment and the internal control mechanisms that oppose such changes
Homeostasis
The organ system that protects the body by recognizing and attacking specific kinds of pathogens and cancer cells
Immune system
