movement of nearly 1 million blacks from the south to north during WWI. They moved to cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York.

helped anyone having their rights restricted. SIG: brought about a “rights revolution”
St. Valentines day massacre
seven men who’re illegally sold alcohol are murdered, which makes citizens question if prohibition is worth it. SIG: leads to 18th amendment being repealed.
Conservation era
during this period all presidents were republicans like Harding, Coolidge & Hoover
- Republicans passed a program of higher tariffs, lower taxes, and spending cuts.
Agriculture.
Farming on large scale to sell later
1920’s problem was agriculture! Wartime demand for food dropped, and farmers suffered, so much that they closed. Rich got richer, poor for poorer. SIG: led to the Great Depression.
Black Tuesday
The stock market crashed causeing speculation and buying on the margin
It kick started the Great Depression, and A BIG CHAIN REACTION. People cleared out their bank accounts cause they were scared. So banks lost too much money and closed. No money for banks to loan=businesses failing.

People would buy large amount of stock to make a big profit

Many regular people bought a bunch of shares left and right, hoping to sell them soon for a quick profit. When no one wanted to buy them, the value dropped to nothing.

increased tax on imported goods, but limited out market
SIG: it reduced market which we needed even more since we were economically depressed. His response made the depression worse.
Causes of the Great Depression
Tariffs and war debt policies that cut down the foreign market for American goods.
- A crisis in the farm industry.
- The availability of easy credit allowed people to dig a deeper hole. Too much speculation caused a lot of lost profit.
- An unequal distribution of income.
