Volume
The measure of the amount of space an object takes up
Extensive Property
Depends on the amount of matter an object contains
Intensive Property
Depends on the type of matter in a sample
Physical Property
An observed quality or condition that can be observed or measured without changing an objects physical composition
Solid
An form of matter that has a definite shape and volume
Liquid
A form of matter with no definite shape and a definite volume
Gas
A form of matter that has no definite shape or volume
Vapor
Describes the gaseous state of a substance that is generally a solid or liquid at room temperature
Physical Change
Properties of a material that change but don’t change the composition of matter
Mass
The amount of matter an object contains
Mixture
A physical blend of two or more components
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout
Homogeneous Mixture aka. Solution
A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout
Phase
Describes any part of a sample with uniform composition and properties
Filtration
The process that separates a solid from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture
Distillation
A way to separate water form other components
Element
The simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties
Compound
A substance that contains two or more chemically combined elements
Chemical Change
A change that produces matter with a different composition than the original matter
Chemical Symbol
A two letter representation of an element
Chemical Property
The ability of a substance to undergo a change
Chemical Reaction
A process that changes substances into a new substance
Reactant
A substance present at the start of a chemical reaction
Product
A substance produced in a chemical reaction
