Chapter 2 Vocab Flashcards
Polymer
Product of polymerization; formed by monomers
Carbohydrate
Compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, usually in a ratio of 1:2:1
Monosaccharides
Single sugar molecules
Polysaccharide
Many monosaccharides put together
Lipid
Made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms; usually not soluble in water
Nucleic acid
Macromolecules containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, and phosphorus; formed from nucleotides
Nucleotide
Consist of 3 parts - 5 carbon sugar, phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base
Ribonucleic acid
Similar to DNA but has ribose instead of deoxyribose
Deoxyribonucleic acid
Map of life; contains genetic/hereditary information
Proteins
Macromolecules that contain nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Amino acids
Compounds with an amino (-NH2) and a carbonyl group (-COOH)
Chemical reaction
Process that changes one set of chemicals into another set of chemicals
Reactant
Elements/compounds that enter a reaction
Products
Elements/compounds that come out of a reaction
Activation energy
Energy needed to start reaction
