7-3 7-4 Vocab Flashcards
Cell wall
Supporting layer around the membrane normally in plant cells
Lipid bilayer
Double layered sheets that make up the cell membrane
Concentration
Mass of solute in solutions
Diffusion
Particles moving from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Equilibrium
Concentration is the same throughout a solution
Osmosis
Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic
Two solutions are the same strength
Hypertonic
The more concentrated of twosolutions
Hypotonic
Solution that is less concentrated
Facilitated diffusion
Extra channels for molecules that cannot diffuse across the regular cell membrane
Active Transport
Requires energy to move materials against the concentration gradient
Endocytosis
Taking materials into the cell by pockets of the cell membrane
Phagocytosis
Cytoplasm surrounds a particle and packages it in a cell vacuole from there the cell engulfs it
Pinocytosis
Pockets in the membrane take up liquid, pinch off, and form vacuoles
Exocytosis
Membrane of the vacuole joins with cell membrane and forces the contents out of the cell
