Conflict Theory
Idea that conflict is the main drive in societal change, and that social order is the illusions of this conflict.
Rationalizaion
Introduced by Max Weber and is the idea of traditional values, customs, and emotions being replaced by logical rules and reason.
Social Fact
An unseen force of social influence that affects individuals
ex.social norms,
Functionalism
Developed by Emile Durkheim, and saw society function in various parts that work together for the good of the whole.
Ex. (School = brain) (heart = hospital) what do they do for society?
Manifest Functions
Explicit goals of a particular function/action in society
Ex.Education = teach people
Latent Functions
unintended results of functions/actions not immediately apparent
Ex.Education = education gap
Dysfunctional
Actions that have negative effects on society that can be changed
Positivism
Societal study through specifically empirical based evidence (controlled experiments or statistics)
Standpoint
Experiences based on social location
Positionality
Social location and privilege
Snowball Sampeling
When the interviewee tells you about another possible individual to interview
Ethnographic Approach
Research immerses themselves in the culture they are attempting to research
Ex. (fieldwork, participant interviews, etc.)
Socialization
Process through which individuals learn the written and unwritten rules of society
