Chapter 2- The Chemical Basis of Life Flashcards
How many bonds does carbon like to form?
4
What is organic chemistry?
Contains Carbon
What chemical reaction allows bonds to break?
Endothermic
What are the four main categories of large organic molecules that we discussed in class?
Carbohydrates, Protein, Lipids, and Nucleic Acids.
What are the monomers of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides
Two of these come together to form________.
Disaccharides
Many come together to form __________.
Polysaccharides
What are the three types of lipids we discussed?
Saturated fats, Eicosanoids, and Steroids.
What is the difference between a trans fat, a saturated fat, and an unsaturated fat?
Saturated fat has single covalent bonds between carbon atoms. Unsaturated fat has one or more double covalent bonds between carbons.
Why are proteins so important? What functions do they have?
They make up enzymes. The enzymes speed up reactions.
The monomers of proteins are?
Amino Acid
How many amino acids are there?
20
What 3 parts do all amino acids consist of?
NH2 group, Carboxyl group, and side chain
What are the monomers units of nucleic acids?
Nucleotides
What are the 2 types of nucleic acids?
DNA and RNA
