Chapter 2 Test OR Questions Flashcards
Polar Molecule
The electrons of the molecule are unequally shared
What causes polarity?
A difference in electronegativity
Capillary action
The collective work of cohesion+adhesion of water through a plant
Adhesion of water to the walls of cells helps counter the downward pull of gravity
Surface tension
A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid
Specific Heat
The amount of heat that must be absorbed/lost for 1g of a substance to change 1 degree Celsius
High specific heat
It takes more to change water than other liquids
- Stabilizes ocean temperature
- Keeps land/water temperature in the limits for life
- Organisms can resist drastic change in their temperature (made of water)
- Can moderate air temperature
Heat of vaporization
The quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for 1g of it to be converted from a liquid to a gas
Evaporative cooling
Warmer molecules evaporate and leave cool ones behind
- Stabilizes temperature of large bodies of water
- Produces a mechanism that protects organisms from overheating
Expansion upon freezing
The hydrogen bonds become widespread
Keeps bodies of water from freezing solid
Versatility as a solvent
Water is the universal solvent because water is polar and is attracted to positive and negative charges
