Attributes
Qualities and characteristics of a person
Certification
An external verification of the competencies that an individual has achieved and typically involves an examination process; i health care these processes are typically designed to verify that an individual has achieved minimum competencies to ensure safe and effective pt care.
Communication
the exchange of thoughts messages and information.
Continuing education
lifelong learning
Continuous quality improvements
CQI programs designed to improve the level of care; commonly driven by quality assurance.
Credentialing
A local process by which an individual is permitted by a specific entity, to practice in a specific setting.
Advanced emergency medical tech.
An EMS professional who provides basic and limited advanced skills to PT who access the EMS system
Emergency medical responder
An EMS professional who provides basic life support care to patients who access the EMS system; formally called first responders.
Empathy
Showing a person care and compassion with an appreciation for his or her situation without feeling the same emotions.
EMS system
A network of resources that provide emergency care and transport to victims of sudden illness or injury.
Ethics
Expectations established by the community at large reflecting their views of of the conduct of the profession.
Health care
A business associated with the provisions of the medical care to individuals.
Healthcare professional
An individual who has special skills and knowledge in medicine and adheres to the standards of conduct and performance of that medical profession.
Integrity
Doing the right thing even when no one is looking
Licensure
Permission granted to an individual by a government authority, such as a state to perform certain restricted activities.
Medical director
A physician responsible for the oversight of the EMS system and the actions of the paramedic; also known as a physician advisor.
National registry of emergency medical technicians
A national organization developed to ensure that graduates of the EMS training programs have met minimal standards by measuring competency through a uniform testing process.

Online medical direction
Direct voice communication by a medical director to a prehospital professional while he or she is attending to the pt.
Physician advisor
A physician responsible for the oversight of the EMS system and the actions of the paramedics (medical director)
Profession
A group of similar jobs or fields of interest that involve a responsibility to serve the public and require mastery of specific knowledge and specialized skills.
Prospective medical direction
Physician participation in the development of EMS protocols, procedures and participation in the education and testing of EMS professionals; a type of offline medical direction.
Protocols
A set of treatment guidelines written for the paramedic to follow.
Quality assurance
QA Programs designed to achieve a desired level of care.
Reciprocity
The ability for an EMS professional to use his or her certification of license to be able to practice in a different state.
Refresher education
the process of refreshing information and skills previously learned.
Registration
The process of entering an individuals name and essential information into a record as a means of verifying initial certification and monitoring recertification.
Retrospective medical direction
Physician review of prehospital care reports and participation in the quality improvement process; a type of offline medical direction.
Scope of practice
A predefined set of skills, interventions or other activities that the paramedic is legally authorized to perform when necessary; usually set by state law regulation and local medical direction.
Standing orders
Written instructions that authorize EMS personnel to perform certain medical interventions before establishing direct communication with a physician.
Teamwork
The ability to work with others to achieve a common goal.
