chapter 2: study guide Flashcards
what’s a compound?
a substance that can be decomposed to simpler substances, they have fixed compositions
examples of compounds
water (H2O), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium chloride (NaCl), methane (CH4)
what are mixtures?
they consist of two or more substances that are physically mixed
what are the 2 types of mixtures?
homogenous or solution: same composition
heterogenous: vary in composition
what is an element?
a substance that cannot be decomposed to simpler substances
what are physical changes?
changes in matter that do not change the composition of a substance (ex. change in temperature, volume, and shape)
what are chemical changes?
result in new substances (ex. oxidation, combustion, and decomposition)
what are intensive properties?
are independent of the amount of the substance that is present (ex. color, odor, density, melting point, and hardness)
what are extensive properties?
depend upon that amount of substance present (ex. mass, volume, and energy)
what are the 2 properties under physical properties?
extensive and intensive properties
