Chapter 2 - Regional Inequalities Flashcards
What is the Backwash effect?
Strengthening of the core, weakening of the periphery.
What is the spread effect?
When the core contributes to the development of the periphery.
What does the Myrdal Model/ dependency theory suggest?
The Myrdal Model is an emphasis on the backwash effect, suggesting that the core feeds off of the periphery’s resources, stopping them from developing. It is also called the Dependency theory.
What does the Friedman’s model suggest?
The Friedman Model is a more dynamic version of the Myrdal one. It describes an evolution over time of equal and current exchange between the core and the periphery suggesting that the latter will evolve into the other.
What is a Development Gap?
The term refers to the difference between a core and it’s periphery. On a global scale, this would mean the increasing difference between MEDCs and LEDCs.
