Chapter 2 pt.4 Flashcards
What is Broca’s area
An area in the frontal lobe associated with language production.
Damage done to Broca’s area is called what?
Brocas Aphasia (ungrammatical speech and difficulty understanding speech)
What is Wernickes area
Area in the temporal lobe associated with understanding language
Damage done to wernicks area is called what?
Wernickes aphasia = difficulty understanding language
What is the Occipital lobe
the lobe at the back of the brain that analyzes incoming visual information
What is the Parietal lobe
The lobe at the top of the brain that is responsible for sensations caused by stimulation to the skin (and some visual information)
What is the Frontal lobe
The lobe in the front of the brain that is in charge of language, though, memory, and motor functioning
Damage in the temporal lobe causes an inability to recognize faces, what is this condition called?
Prosopagnosia
What is double dissociation
When damage to one area of the brain causes a function to be absent while another function is present (and vice versa)
What are Voxels
Small cube shaped areas in the brain used in the analysis of data
What is an FMRI?
A brain imaging technique that measures how blood flow changes in response to cognitive activity
What is the “Fusiform Face Area (FFA)”
The area in the temporal lobe that contains many neurons that respond selectively to faces
What is the Parahippocampal Place area (PPA)”
The area in the temporal lobe that contains neurons that are selectively activated by pictures of indoor and outdoor scenes
What is the “Extrastriate Body Area (EBA)”
Activated by pictures of bodies and parts of bodies
Most of our experience is “Multidimensional,” what does this mean?
Even simple experiences involve combinations of different qualities.
Eg.looking at a face, in addition to identifying an object as a face, we also respond to the following aspects of faces: where are they looking, how attractive they are, if you’ve seen the face before, etc.
