Chapter 2 : Properties of Materials Flashcards
In a solution of sugar and water, which is the solvent and which is the solution?
The sugar is the solute and the water is the solvent
What is the difference between dissolving and melting?
Dissolving always involves 2 substances, melting only involves 1.
How is a solution made?
When a solute is dissloved in a solvent.
Define ‘soluable’.
A substance that is able to dissolve.
Define ‘insoluable’
A substance that is unable to dissolve.
What is a saturated solution?
A saturated solution is a solution that is unable to dissolve anymore soluable solids because too many have already been dissolved.
How do you make a saturated solution?
By adding a soluable solid into a solvent until no more is able to be dissolved.
What is an independant variable?
A variable that you control/change.
What is a dependant variable?
A variable that you measure.
What is a controlled variable?
The variables that do not change and are kept the same.
What is paper chromatography?
It is a way of separating chemicals using special paper.
What is the difference between a solute, a solvent and a solution.
A solute is dissolved in a solvent to form a solution.
Is milk a solution? Explain why.
No. It is because all solutions are transparent. Milk is opaque.
What is the difference between transparent and opaque?
You are able to see through a transparent substance, whereas you are unable to see through an opque substance.
Explain how the liquid separates ink in a paper chromatography.
The liquid carries the ink up the paper. Different kinds of ink particles have different solubilities, so it is carried up different distances before they are left behind on the paper. The more soluable the ink, the further it is carried up.
What happens to the colour of a substance when you add more water?
It becomes a lighter colour.
What effect does the increase in temperature normally have on the solubility of salts?
It increases the solubility and more salt is able to be dissolved.
