Chapter 2: physical properties of matter Flashcards
What does matter refer too?
Anything that has mass or volume.
What is mass?
The amount of matter something has.
What is volume?
The amount of space an object occupies.
What does strength refer to?
Strength refers to the ability of a material to support a heavy load without tearing or breaking
What does hardness refer to?
Hardness is the ability of a material to scratch another material.
Can a soft object scratch an object harder than itself?
No. Objects can only scratch other objects that are softer than itself.
What does flexibility refer to?
Flexibility refers to the ability of a material to bend without breaking and returning to its original shape.
What is electrical conductivity in materials?
Electrical conductivity of a material is a measure of how easily electricity passes through it.
What does Thermal/heat conductivity refer to?
It refers to how easily heat passes through an object.
What does the melting point refer to?
It refers to the point in temperature in which a material changes state from solid to liquid
What does boiling point refer to?
The boiling point refers to the temperature in which a material changes state from liquid to gas.
What is density?
It is the amount of mass each unit volume in an object.
