C7 Particulate theory of matter Flashcards
1
Q
What is the particulate theory of matter?
A
- particles are very small and cannot be seen without a microscope
- there are different sized spaces between matter for solids, liquids, and gases
- the particles of matter move (different speeds for different states)
- particles are constantly in random motion
2
Q
What are the characteristics of matter in solids?
A
- particles are close together
- particles cannot move but vibrate in place
- particles are packed together uniformly
3
Q
What are the characteristics of matter in liquids?
A
- particles are still close together but further apart than in solids
- particles slide and move around short distances constantly
- particles are not in a fixed pattern
4
Q
What are the characteristics of gases?
A
- particles are far apart
- particles move around freely
- particles are not in a fixed pattern
5
Q
What are the properties of solids?
A
- definite shape
- definite volume
- cannot flow
- cannot be compressed
6
Q
What are the properties of liquids?
A
- indefinite shape
- definite volume
- can flow and take the shape of containers
- cannot be compressed
7
Q
What are the properties of gases?
A
- have no definite shape
- have no definite volume
- can flow and take the shape of containers
- can be compressed
8
Q
What happens when particles are cooled?
A
particles slow down and lose energy causing them to shrink and lose volume
9
Q
What happens when particles are heated?
A
Particles gain energy and move around faster and further away from each other causing volume to increase.
10
Q
Do the size and mass of particles change when heated or cooled?
A
No. The only thing that increases is volume.
