Chapter 2 - Other Ways of Seeing The World Flashcards
Ecology considers animal behavior by considering what?
How animals behave in relationship to each other, and how animals behave in relation to their environment.
Umwelt is
The external environment that an organism lives in (Outside)
Innenwelt is…
The world as it is perceived and internalized (Inside)
how does the tick understand a mammal?
1.DINNER! 2. A mammal to a tick is smell of butyric acid + warmth
What is the Go-No Go test?
It was a test given to Pigeons(Ps), get food if they pecked when the light is on, no food + delay if they peck when light is off.
This is how RENY & EMMERTON discovered sensitivity to ultraviolet in Ps.
What is a Pigeons vision like?
Looking upward = Ps have “normal” long-sighted vision
Looking down = Switch to this high res/acuity system (acuity is best at 10 cm).
How many cones do Ps have?
They have 6 cones. But we learn with the go-no go test that they have no mixture of yellow + blue that a p will accept as green.
SPETCH & FRIEDMAN (2006)
They trained Ps to discriminate and peck 1 or 2 objects (diff shapes/same color)
WATANABE, SAKAMOTO, & WAKITA (1995)
They discovered that Ps could learn between Monet and Picasso paintings.
What molecules are inhaled to the nose and bind to the olfactory mucosa?
Odrants
What molecule is inhaled to the nose and bind to the olfactory mucosa?
Odorants
Many animals use smell for ?
Communication, Navigation, & Recognizing others
GRIFFIN (1986)
Discovered that when they are attacking/avoiding an obstacle it turns to a “buzz”
DAWKINS
“I think bats hear in color”
GROSSETETE & MOSS (1998)
Discovered same species can discriminate between a wing beating @41/min vs 50/min
