Chapter 2; Naming Ions Flashcards
How are ionic compounds named
Cation name followed by anion name
Cations come from ____ atoms
Metal atoms
When naming a cation, what is the general rule?
The name of the cation is the name of the element, unless the metal can hold different charges
If a cation element holds many different charges, how would you write its name?
With Roman numerals indicating what positive charge it has
Ex: Cu3+, Cu2+, Cu+
Copper (III), Copper (II), Copper (I)
What is a polyatomic ion?
An ion composed of two or more different elements
Ex: NaCl
If a cation is polyatomic (2 or more different element types), then how would you name it?
The name of the element plus -ium at the end
Ex: NH4+, Ammonium
Name 4 common cations with a +1 charge
H+ (Hydrogen)
Na+ (Sodium)
K+ (Potassium)
Ag+ (Silver)
Name 3 common cations with a 2+ charge
Mg2+ (Magnesium)
Ca2+ (Calcium)
Zn2+ (Zinc)
Name a common cation with a 3+ charge
Al3+ (Aluminum)
Ionic compounds consist of ___
Metal and nonmetal elements
When do you add -ide on the end of an anion element?
When the element is by itself and with few exceptions, are not polyatomic ions
What are oxyanions?
Anions that have oxygen elements attached to them (only goes to 4 powers)
