What are Phonetics and Phonology?
subfields of linguistics that study the structure and systematic patterning of sounds in human language.
What is Morphology?
the subfield of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words and the relationship among words.
Syntax is
the subfield of linguistics that studies the internal structure of sentences and the relationships among their component parts.
Semantics is
the subfield of linguistics that studies the nature of the meaning of individual words, and the meaning of words grouped into phrases and sentences.
What is Pragmatics?
the subfield of linguistics the use of words in the actual context of discourse.
Differences between simple and complex words
A simple word is a minimal unit that cannot be broken down into smaller meaningful parts.
What is a complex word?
A word that can be broken down into smaller parts.
What is a morpheme?
Any part of a word that cannot be broken down further into meaningful parts.
Morphemes are placed in two classes:
free and bound
What is an affix?
A bound morpheme that is attached to a stem and modifies its meaning in some way or indicates person, number, gender or tense. eg. prefixes and suffixes.
Not all bound morphemes are
affixes or bound bases. e.g. contractions.
