Chapter 2 Medical Terminology Flashcards
Inert
lacking the power to move
Ions
atom with a positive or negative electric charge
Ionic Bond
chemical bond formed by electron TRANSFER between atoms
Covalent Bond
chemical bond formed by electron SHARING between atoms
Polar
uneven distribution of positive and negative charges in small molecules
Molecule
particle consisting of 2 or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds
Compound
substance composed of 2 or more different elements, the atoms of which are chemically united
Synthesis Reaction
a chemical reaction in which larger, more complex atoms or molecules are formed from simpler ones
Decomposition Reaction
chemical reaction in which a molecule is broken down into smaller molecules or its constituent atoms
Catalyst
substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself becoming chemically changed or part of the product
Electrolyte
chemical substances that ionize and dissociate in water and are capable of conducting an electrical current
Acid
a substance that releases hydrogen ions when in solution; a proton donor
Base
a substance capable of binding with hydrogen ions; a proton acceptor
pH
the measure of acidity or alkalinity
Buffer
chemical substance or system that minimizes changes in pH releasing or binding hydrogen ions
