What is the definition of health status?
An individual or population’s overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and disease risk factors.
How is health status measured for individuals? Include an example
By tests conducted by health professionals. An example includes blood tests.
How is health status measured for a population and whole countries? Include an example
Using health status indicators. An example includes mortality.
What is the definition of incidence?
The number or rate of new cases of a condition during a specified time, usually a 12 month period.
What is the definition of prevalence?
The number or proportion of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time.
What is the definition of morbidity?
Refers to ill-health in an individual and the levels of ill health in a population or group.
What is the definition of burden of disease?
Measures that gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free from disease and disability. Is measured in DALY’s.
What is the definition of disability-adjusted life year (DALY)? (YLL+YLD)
One DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease, or injury.
What is the definition of years of Life lost (YLL)?
Each YLL represents one year of life lost due to premature death.
What is the definition of years lived with disability (YLD)?
Measure of how many years of life are lost due to disease, injury, disability.
What is the definition of life expectancy?
The number of years of life, on average, remaining to an individual at a particular age if death rates do not change.
What is the definition of health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE)?
A measurement that considers life expectancy data and the impact of ill heath in a population.
What is the definition of mortality?
Refers to a number of deaths in a population in a given period (usually 12 months).
What is the definition of maternal mortality rate?
Number of mothers who die as a result of pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000 live births.
What is the definition of infant mortality rate?
Measures the rate of deaths of infants between birth and their first birthday, usually expressed per 100,000 live births (0-12 months).
What is the definition of under 5 mortality rate (U5MR)?
Measures the number of children that die before their birthday, usually expressed per 100,000 live births (1-5 years).
What is the definition of self-assessed health status?
A measure of overall health which reflects a persons perception of their own health at a given moment in time. It it very subjective.
How is self-assessed health status measured?
Excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor.
