Health Status
An individual’s or population’s overall health and wellbeing, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors

Life expectancy
The number of years of life, on average, remaining to an individual at a particular age if death rates do not change.
Mortality (rate)
The number of death in a population in a given period
Morbidity (rate)
The rate of ill health in a population in a given period
Incidence
Refers to the number of new cases of condition in a given period
Prevalence
Refers to the total number of cases of a condition at a given period
YLL: Years of Life Lost
A measure of how many years of expected life was lost due to premature death. (One YLL is equal to one year of life lost due to premature death.)
YLD: Years Lost due to Disability
A measure of the impact of morbidity on a group or population, (One YLD is equal to one ‘healthy’ year of life lost due to time lived with disease, injury or disability.)
DALY: Disability adjusted life years
A measure of burden of disease (One DALY is equal to one year of healthy life lost due to illness and/or death
DALY=YLL+YLD)
Burden of disease
A measure of impact of disease and injuries; specifically it measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability
Chronic conditions
Any disease or conditions that lasts a long time (usually longer than six months)(e.g. Asthma)
Rate of hospitalisation: Hospital separations
Episodes of hospital care that starts with admission and end at transfer, discharge or death
Core activity limitation
when an individaul has difficulty, or requires assistance with any of the three core activities (self care, mobility, communication in own language)
Core activity: Self care
Examples:
* Bathing/showering
* Dressing/undressing
* Eating/feeding
* Going to the toilet
Core activity: Mobility
moving around away from home
moving around at home
getting in or out of bed /chair
Core activity: Communication in own language
Understanding/being understood by strangers, friends, family, including use of sign language and lip reading
Psychological distress
Relates to unpleasant feeling and emotions that affect an individual’s level of functioning
Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10)
A scale of psychological distress based on answers to 10 questions about negative emotional and mental stress in the four weeks prior to interview
Age of youth
