Chapter 2: Matter And The Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter are substances that has mass and occupies space
Give the three types of matter
- Atom
- Molecules
- Ions
Give the three types of subatomic particles
- Proton
- Neutron
- Electron
What is the nucleon number
Total number of proton and neutron in the nucleus of an atom
Nucleon number = proton + neutron
What is the proton number
The number of proton in the nucleus of an atom
Give the three states of matter
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
What is an isotope
An isotope is the atoms of some element with the same proton number but different nucleon number. (Different amount of neutron)
Define the difference between isotopes
Isotope have the same chemical property (reaction) because the atoms have same number of valence electrons.
Isotope have different physical properties (boiling point)
What did John Dalton discovered
Atoms
What did J.J Thomson discovered
Electrons
What did Ernest Rutherford discovered
Protons
What did Neils Bohr’s discovered
Electrons in an atom move in shells
What did James Chadwick discovered
Neutrons
What is an ion?
Charged particles. If an atom received electron, it forms anion, negative ions. If an atom donate its valence electron it forms cations, positive ions.
What is a molecule
Made up of two or more non mental atoms which combine chemically by sharing valence electrons
