A map showing physical/natural landforms such as mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts, etc. change only by geological processes.
Physical map
An explanatory table of symbols on a map.
Map key
A map showing the borders defining countries, states, providence a, cities, territories, etc. shows how humans have impacted the landscape and they can change frequently.
Political map
Can represent a variety of information including things like climate, precipitation, vegetation, elevations etc.
Land use/resource map
A map showing the number of people in a location or area.
Population map
A map showing climate for certain areas.
Climate maps
A design used on a map to show directions.
Compass rose
Most commonly used directions; north, east, south, west.
Cardinal directions
Directions half-way between cardinal points; northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest
Intermediate directions
This is a line between poles that is almost 25,000 miles around.
Equator
Half of a sphere.
Hemisphere
A line on a map or globe half way between the north and south poles.
Equator
Line of longitude running from the North Pole to the South Pole and marked by 0 degrees.
Prime meridian
Distance above or below the equator which measures north and south.
Latitude
The distance east or west of the prime meridian.
