Chapter 2: Introducing The Brain Flashcards
Neurons are made up of 3 components. What are they?
Cell body, dendrites and axon.
What is the cell body’s function?
It contains the nucleus (genetic coding and involved in protein synthesis)
What is the function of dendrites?
They are branching structures that carry info from other neurons.
What is an axon?
It’s a branching structure that carries info to other neurons and transmits an action potential.
The nervous system is made up of another cell type, what is it? And what is the ratio of them to neurons with the nervous system?
Glia cells and 1:1
What do glia cells do?
Essential support functions, tissue repair and formation of myelin.
What is a neuron?
Type of cell within the nervous system that supports cognitive function.
