Chapter 2 - Inflammation and Healing Flashcards
A leukocyte, plays a role in phagocytosis
Neutrophil
The process by which neutrophils and macrophages randomly engulf and destroy bacteria, cell debris, or foreign matter
Phagocytosis
“The vulture cells”
Macrophages
Nonspecific agents that protect uninfected cells against viruses
Interferon
Based on the difference between arterial pressure as compared to the hydrostatic pressure of the interstitial fluid in the tissues as well as the relative osmotic pressures in the blood and interstitial fluid
Net Hydrostatic Pressure
The pressure exerted by the flow of water through a semipermeable membrane separating two solutions with different concentrations of solute
Osmotic Pressure
The body’s nonspecific response to tissues jury resulting in redness, swelling, warmth, and pain, and perhaps loss of function
Example: ends in “itis”, appendicitis
Inflammation
A chemical released in the body during an inflammatory response or immune response
Chemical mediators
