Chapter 2: Immunity & The Lymphatic System Flashcards
lymphatic system
network of vessels, nodes, & immune tissue
immune system
defends body against pathogens, foreign particles & abnormal body cells
lympth
fluid within lymphatic vessels; ends up in circulatory system (bloodstream).
contains: debris, tissue fluid, bacteria, viruses, etc.
flows through lymph nodes & immune tissues.
lympth nodes
filter lympth, shows foreign particles to immune cells (aka WBC’s)
tonsils
contains lymphatic tissue, back of throat, contract with ingested, inhaled pathogens
thymus
housing maturing lymphocytes (immune cells aka t cells)
antigen (Ag)
something foreign to a body- stimulates immune system
antibody (Ab)
protein made by immune system for the specific antigen it “sees”
AKA IMMUNOGLOBULIN (other name for antibody)
leukocytes
white blood cells (WBC)
lymphocytes
B & T Cells, neutrohils, monocytes (aka macrophages)
2 types of immunity
- Innate (non specific) Immunity
2. Specific (acquired, adaptive) Immunity
innate (non specific) immunity
no prior exposure to pathogenic agent required, same response each time
innate (non specific) immunity 1st line of defense
intact skin, mucous membranes, tears, saliva
innate (non specific) immunity 2nd defense line
- phagocytosis
- natural killer cells (NK)
- complement proteins (seek & destroy some bacteria)
- fever
- inflammation
phagocytosis
the ingestion of bacteria or other materials by phagocytes (engulfing eachother)
