What is over nutrition?
Excess nutrients and/or calories in the diet.
What is undernutrition ?
State of inadequate nutrition.
What is malnutrition?
A long-term outcome of consuming diet that doesn’t meet nutrient needs. Can result from both over and under nutrition.
What are dietary reference intakes (DRIs)?
To tell you have much of each nutrient you need to consume to:
- maintain good health
- prevent chronic diseases
- avoid unhealthy excesses
What are dietary guidelines for Americans?
The most recent physical activity and nutrition recommendations.
What are some dietary guidelines recommendations?
- increase physical activities
- control calorie intake
- reduce and/or moderate alcohol consumption
- consume more nutrient rich foods and beverages
- select foods with more potassium, fiber, calcium & vitamin D
What are some myplate recommendations?
- balance calories
- make half your plate fruits and vegetables
- make at least half your grains whole
- switch to fat-free or 1% milk
- drink water instead of sugary drinks
What are the four food components on a label?
- name of the food
- net weight
- name and address of manufacturer or distributor
- list of ingredients in descending order by weight
What are functional foods?
Foods that have a positive effect on health providing beyond basic nutrients.
●Example: Carrots, which contain beta-carotene, a phytochemical that protects cells from damaging substances that increase risk of some chronic diseases, including cancer
●tomatoes=prostate cancer
●active cultures in yogurt=supports intestinal health
●dark chocolate & green apples=contribute to heart health
