Chapter 2: Forces Flashcards
What force pulls on mass due to gravity?
Weight
What happens to an object when forces acting on it are not equal?
It’s velocity changes
What happens to an object when forces acting on it are equal?
It’s velocity stays the same
What is it called when forces acting on a falling object become balanced and it’s velocity stays the same?
Terminal Velocity
What does ‘work’ mean?
To transfer energy
What is the energy stored in a spring called?
Elastic potential energy
What is hooke’s law?
The extension of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied
On a spring extension vs weight graph, what is the point where the graph curves called?
The limit of proportionality
What is F = k x e?
Force = Spring constant X Extenstion
What is the extension of a spring measured in?
Meters
What are work and force measured in?
Work is measured in Joules, force is measured in newtons
What is the formula for working out power and what is it measured in?
Power = Work done / Time taken
Power = Watts (W)
What is Kinetic energy measured in?
Joules
What is weight measured in?
Newtons
What is g?
Gravitational field strength. On earth it is 10 N/kg
