Chapter 2: Energy Flow in the Biosphere Flashcards
What is a Trophic Level?
How living things obtain their energy.
What are Autotrophs?
An organism which use the sun’s energy and raw supplies to make its own food; a producer.
What are Primary Consumers?
Depends on autotrophs directly for their source of energy.
What are Secondary Consumers?
Depends on primary consumers for their source of energy, however they are still reliant on the autotrophs in the first trophic level.
What are Hetertrophs?
Cannot make their own food, and so must acquire their food and energy from autotrophs.
What is a Food Web?
A representation of the feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem.
What are the products of Photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water + energy → glucose + oxygen
What are the products of Cellular Respiration?
glucose + oxygen → Carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is Chemosynthesis?
The process by which non-photosynthetic organisms convert inorganic compounds to organic compounds without solar energy.
What is the %
10%
What is the First Law of Thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one to another.
What is the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?
In every energy conversion, energy is lost and less energy is available for the next conversion
What are the 3 types of Ecological Pyramids?
Pyramid of Numbers, Pyramid of Biomass, Pyramid of Energy
What is an Ecological Pyramid?
A representation of energy flow in food chains and webs.
Stuff about Pyramid of Numbers
- # of organisms at each trophic level in an ecosystem.
- Each bar illustrates numbers relative to the pyramid base.
