Chapter 1: Energy & Matter Exchange in the Biosphere Flashcards
What is Population?
Group of individuals of the same species.
What is Community?
The population of all species which occupy a habitat.
What is Ecosystem?
- Includes both biotic and abiotic elements.
- Functional unit of the biosphere.
- Community and its physical and chemical environment.
What is Biodiversity?
of species in an ecosystem.
What is a Food Chain?
An arrangement connecting organisms which feed on each other, beginning with a food source such as plants and continuing in order with each consumer.
What is Biotic?
Living element of the biosphere.
What is Abiotic?
Non-living element of the biosphere.
What is the purpose of the producer?
To make its own food.
What is the purpose of the Consumer?
They eat producers or other consumers to survive.
What are Endangered Species?
One which is close to extinction in all sections of the country or in a vital large location.
What are Extirpated Species?
They no longer live in one section of the country, however they can be found in others.
What are Threatened Species?
Probably to become endangered if factors which make it vulnerable.
What is Special Concern?
Any species which is at risk because of low or declining/reducing numbers at the fringe of its range or in some confined area.
What are Indicator Species?
A species sensitive to small changes in environmental conditions.
What are Herbivores?
Animals which eats only plants.
What are Carnivores?
Animals which feeds only on other animals.
What are Omnivores?
Animals which eats both plants and animals.
What is Detritus?
Wastes from plants and animals, also containing their dead remains.
What is a Decomposer?
- Organism which feeds on detritus.
- Removal of dead organisms and waste products
- Organism which break down detritus to get nutrients for their own use, however in the process also release nutrients o the soil and water.
What is a Habitat?
Place where a species can live.
