Chapter 2: Driving in Stressful Situations Flashcards
When you see red, red/blue flashing lights, or an emergency vehicle approaching from either direction, you must:
Slow down, move as far to the right as possible, and stop
It is illegal to follow a fire truck or ambulance in any lane in the same direction within _________ metres.
150
You see a flashing green light approaching. What vehicle is this?
Fire fighters and volunteer medical responders, using their own vehicles to respond to an emergency.
What should you do if you see a flashing green light?
Yield right-of-way
When an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is stopped in a lane or on the shoulder of your lane, you must:
slow down and pass with caution
When driving at night and approaching an oncoming vehicle, what headlights should you use and how far?
lowbeam headlights within 150m of an approaching vehicle
When driving at night while following a vehicle, what headlights should you use and how far?
lowbeam headlights within 60m behind a vehicle
When driving at night on a curve or hilltop, what headlights should you use and why?
lowbeam headlights; to see oncoming vehicles and avoid blinding oncoming drivers
When driving at night, when can you use highbeam headlights?
When you do not see a vehicle ahead of you or any headlights than your own
When driving in fog conditions, what are a few things you should do?
- Drive slowly
- turn on the full lighting system in your car
- use lowbeam headlights or fog lights (if you have them)
- increase following distance
If fog conditions become too dense, what should you do?
Pull completely off road and try to position car in safe parking area, turn on emergency flashers
What is hydroplaning?
Skidding in rainy conditions due to too much water or driving too fast
How should you avoid hydroplaning?
Use good tires with deep tread, slow down when roads are wet
To reduce the chance of skidding, you must have/do:
Smooth steering, braking, and accelerating; avoid sudden action of the three
What are you risking driving on flooded roads?
Water will prevent brakes from working
How should you test your brakes after driving in wet conditions (and provided it is safe to do so)?
brake firmly and quickly at 50km/h:
- vehicle should stop in a straight line
- brake should feel firm and secure
if vehicle pulls to one side or if brake feels spongy, you must take car to repair
You are skidding in wet conditions. What must you do?
Look where you want to go and steer in that direction (do NOT oversteer)
You are skidding in a straight line during icy conditions. What must you do?
Shift to neutral or step on the clutch
What is threshold braking?
Threshold braking: brings you to reasonably quick and controlled stop in your own lane, even in slippery conditions.
How do you perform a threshold brake?
- Brake as hard as you can without locking up or skidding the wheels
- If you feel any wheels locking up, release brake pressure slightly, then reapply. Do NOT pump the brakes!
- Continue braking in this fashion until vehicle comes to complete stop
If you are caught during a whiteout or blowing snow, what are a few things should you do?
Drive slowly, turn on the full lighting system in your car, increase following distance
