What are the two things you should do if your brakes fail?
- Pump the brakes to temporarily restore hydraulic brake pressure
- If above fails: apply parking brake gently but firmly while holding the release button. When you are able to come to a stop, call for help
Your gas pedal is suddenly stuck. What should you do?
- Try to lift pedal by slipping your foot under it. DO NOT use your hands
- If above fails: turn on hazard lights and shift to neutral. Stop as soon as you can (off-road if possible). Turn off ignition and call for help
Your headlights go out suddenly. What should you do?
Check the switch, and if the lights remain off, turn on hazard lights and bring your vehicle to a safe stop off the road. Call for help.
Should you continue driving if your headlights can’t be turned on?
No. It is dangerous and illegal to drive at night without lights. Call for help.
While driving, your car is forced off the road and your wheels leave the pavement, causing you to lose control. What should you do?
- Grip your steering wheel firmly and take your foot off the gas pedal. Avoid heavy braking.
- When you are able to regain control, steer toward pavement.
- Correct steering and increase speed when wheels are fully on pavement.
Your tire blows out while driving. What should you do?
Take your foot off the gas pedal and steer vehicle firmly in direction you want to go. Stop off the road.
You get into a car accident. Someone is injured. What should you do?
- Do not drive away. Stay at the scene and call for help.
- Turn off all engines and turn on all emergency flashers.
- Stay with injured person until help arrives.
