GDP
The total value of goods and services produced by a country in a year. Dividing GDP population gives GDP per person (per capita). GDP is now measure in PPP
Purchasing power parity (PPP)
Shows what gdp will buy in a country. Lower income countries usually have low prices so $1 will buy more than in Uk
Poverty line
Minimum income required to meet someone’s basic needs ($1.25 per person per day)
Access to safe drinking water
Percentage of population within access to a improved piped water supply within 1km
Literacy rate
Percentage of population aged 15 or over who can read + write
HDI
Calculate average on life expectancy, education - literacy, education - average length of schooling hours, GDP per capita.
Number between 0 and 1 (higher the better)
Corruption perception index
Uses a scale from 0-10 (0- corrupt, 10- honest) to rank how stable a government is
Dependency ratio
Proportion of the people below (0-14) and above (over 65) the normal working age
Maternal mortality
Number of mother’s per 100,00 who die in childbirth
Fertility rate
Average number of births per woman
Birth rate
Number of live births per 1000 per year
Infant mortality
Number of children per 1000 who die before first birthday
