Chapter 2 - Chemistry Flashcards
What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be created or broken down.
Ion
An element with a charge
Cation
An element with a positive charge
Anion
An element with a negative charge
Ionic Bonding
Attraction between an anion and a cation
Compound
Substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Non Polar covalent bond
Sharing electron equally
Polar covalent bond
Sharing electron unequally
PH
A measure of acidity in the blood
Organic Compounds
Compounds that have a carbon back bone
Carbohydrates
-Provides energy for the body
- Sugar gives energy
Carbohydrates in the body
-Monosaccharides
-Disaccharides
-Polysaccharides
Monosaccharides
Simple Sugars:
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
Disacharides
Sucrose
lactose
maltose
How do we achieve disaccharides?
Disaccharides must be broken down to monosaccharides before the body can absorbed them.
-Removing water from a bond in this case water from disaccharide for absorption
-Removing water to combine two sugars is what makes a disaccharide.
